Get the Most Out Of Your Boating Experience With Powerboat Training

Powerboating can be an exhilarating, fun and uplifting experience. Whether it is blasting through waves on a coastal stretch or passing through a town on a calm river, the possibilities with powerboating are extensive.

To get the most from your powerboat however you may need the required training. The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) offer a number of courses to instruct you on how to use a powerboat safely and proficiently.

The RYA Training Pathway is a comprehensive and respected system of completing your powerboat training. You can start courses as young as 8 years old, and you can also discuss your options and suitable courses with a RYA Training Centre.

At the beginning of the pathway is the Level 1 Powerboat course. This is ideal for children aged 8-12 who want to learn about powerboating but are perhaps not old enough to fully engage in the activity.

The Level 2 qualification, also known as the National Powerboat Certificate is the most popular course and the standard entry point for powerboat training. The content of the course is varied and suits those who have no experience to those who have been in a powerboat many times. Upon gaining this qualification an individual can then apply for their International Certificate of Competence, required in many European countries when using or chartering vessels, from the RYA.

Further up the ladder is the new Intermediate course, aimed at those undertaking short coastal trips, whilst the advanced course is aimed at the keen amateur or professional powerboater. This course contains a selection of more varied and difficult skills, including rough water handling and night navigation.

There are various other courses available to powerboat users beyond these more core programmes, including a Safety Boat course and an Instructors Course.
